I had the impression reading two entangled books in one:The first book was about a frighteningly realistic depiction of the downfall of our society due to climate change, social issues, corporate slavery, corrupt governments, failure of public infrastructure and so on... really frighteningly accurate and detailed. People always expect "one event" that will kind of trigger the downfall of our world as we know it - but this is far more realistic, we are like this frog sitting in a pot of water that very slowly raises in temperature and we just dont notice and miss the point to jump out of it. It used to be a few homeless you saw on your way to work? Then it was a homeless that occasionally slept in the stairway of your building? Then you stopped wondering about hearing gunshots? and so on...That is the FIRST of the two books and I hated and loved it. It was great.Sure, it has some far fetched points in it (e.g. that dressing as a boy would keep you somehow safe if you are on the road in such a world) but in general it was great. The SECOND book was about a girl somehow dreaming up some kind of mumbo jumbo religion that makes not really more sense than any other religion (sorry but that's the truth ;) ). It is her borderline psychotic form of escapism but somehow she turns it into a cult and this is supposed to be like a beacon of hope or something. This part I just HATED. It is farfetched, unrealistic, unnecessary, taints the brilliant first book it was entangled with...So I would still suggest to read this book, because the FIRST story is just great and I hope it makes everyone FIGHT for the world we have and so often take for granted. Stop your stupid prepping bullshit and turn your efforts into saving what we have, because it is the best world we ever had for as many people.Maybe someone should take it and just cut out all the crappy parts ;) But then again this would be a hell of a depressing story ;)
The book was great, I had to buy it for a course I was taking and found it a surprisingly compelling read. It also came quickly and in perfect condition so overall I am very happy.
The book came quickly and in good condition. Overall a great read- finished in 3 days! I highly recommend this book.
I had hoped for more, but the repetitive graphic description of dead, dying, diseased, raped, abused, violent, aggressive people in the first few pages was over the top and didn't serve its puspose of setting the scene, it was more like the author ran out of things to write in order to evoke the dystopia. I don't expect a Paul Auster, George Orwell, Anthony Burgess or Aldous Huxley in every author trying their hand at this genre, but this did my head in, I have a vivid imagination and found it jarring- WE GET IT- WE GOT IT IN THE FIRST GO!As one other reader said, it's not close enough to current developments in reality to evoke more subtle emotions and provoke deeper thought, but it's not far out enough to be totally far out sci-fi great. Then the typo errors- peddling instead of pedalling- really??!***EDIT*** So I ploughed on until the middle of the book, because after researching the author's biography, her world-view and intentions behind the book, I really did want to give it a chance. But no... I found it upsetting and distrubing. The thing is, if someone who sympathises with Octavia Butler's sentiments reads the book, they will get the message without too many gory details, anyone else will either mostly lack the imaginantion, inspiration or sympathy... I also looked into the sequels, part II is just as harrowing apparently and part III never happened because, according to the web, even the author got depressed and bogged down by the prospects ...
